Doc was hysterical and in a spinning, drooling trance. He screamed out in absolute terror, utterly lost inside his bloody hallucinations.
"The ground opens beneath me!" he screeched.
Kate tried desperately to calm him down but it was all too late as he fell onto his knees.
Lost in an opium haze inside his mind Doc saw himself surrounded by oceans of blood stretching out to the horizon in every direction, filled with thousands of drowning horses and their riders thrashing violently in the crashing red waves all around him.
He watched helplessly as his dying, drowning Mother slowly drifted by helplessly lost in her own currents of crimson guilt and there was not one thing he could possibly do to save her. It was if young Doc was being punished for all of his collected sins at one time here in this bloody vortex of hell as he watched his young mother drown all over again.
Sweet Mattie drifted by sitting atop the old solarium piano playing his mother's haunting melody on it, only backwards, still dressed in her pure white nun's habit, which became more and more blood splattered from the violently thrashing, crimson ocean until she was completely drenched.
Without warning the Dark Posse suddenly surged up out of the stormy red sea in a tidal wave of rage and pink foam. Right behind them rose-up twelve more monstrous riders and Doc realized with a sick shudder that the riders behind the posse were all of the unforgiving men that he had actually killed in his short lifetime. Every single one of them were desperately reaching out for revenge as they all surged forward together in sudden attack, clawing at him with their bloody skeletal fingers, trying to snag even just a small piece of his still living flesh. Every Dark Rider vengefully wanting nothing more than to drag him back down into the bloody sea to share in their own horrific fate. Back down into the endless blood. Blood was all and all was blood.
Two hours later found Kate leading a badly shaken Doc out of the crooked little alley of red tents and back out into the sunshine of the bustling crap filled streets. His coughing spasm had finally slackened and he dabbed absently with his hanky at the bright crimson glaze still shimmering on his lips.
"Well at least when I go to hell now, I'll recognize the damned place," Doc's speech was still slurred as he slowly came back to his senses.
"I am so sorry Doc, I thought it'd be good for you. Relax you," Kate apologized.
"Well my dear, consider that idea a total bust," Doc smiled back at her faintly.
"I thought for sure you and that 'old dragon' would become fast friends. It seemed like a match made in heaven," Kate continued to plead her case.
"And what church do you worship at again, darlin'? You could not have been more wrong," Doc couldn't help but chastise her, because the deep down sense of drug-induced dread still clung to him in all of its clammy vapors.
